James Corbett KC

James Corbett KC is proud to re-join 2, New Street Chambers, where he was previously a pupil barrister. James  was called to the Bar in 1975. He practises as James Corbett KC in England and Wales and internationally, and as Advocate James Corbett in Jersey, Channel Islands.

Called as a lawyer in numerous jurisdictions, James has appeared as counsel in courts and arbitrations throughout the world. He is also a regular speaker at international conferences.

James practises as counsel and as a commercial arbitrator and mediator.

  • Commercial and company law (including board and shareholder disputes)
  • Insolvency and bankruptcy
  • Intellectual property, and
  • Contentious trust and estate disputes.

James Corbett KC is a Chartered Arbitrator and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Hong Kong and Singapore Institutes of Arbitrators. James is a member of several arbitration panels.

He has been a CEDR accredited and registered mediator since 2001 and has mediated many commercial disputes internationally.

Judicial experience

James Corbett was previously a Recorder (part-time judge) and deputy High Court Judge in England and Wales and was also a panel Deemster in the Isle of Man, where he sat as a trial judge and judge of the Staff of Government Division (the Manx Court of Appeal).

Memberships

James Corbett is also a member of the Commercial Bar Association (ComBar), the Chancery Bar Association, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists (ACTAPS).

Career highlights

James was a member of Serle Court, in Lincoln’s Inn, London, one of the most prestigious sets of commercial and chancery barristers, until 2010.

He was then a partner in Kobre & Kim, a New York-based international law firm for 8 years before, in 2018, relocating his practice to Jersey, Channel Islands, where he was formerly Senior Counsel in a prominent litigation firm before setting up JCKC Law and the Chambers of James Corbett KC in Jersey.  He is also a door tenant of Albert Wolff Chambers (the Chambers of Tom Percy KC), Perth, Australia.
